The ITV programme, The Nightly Show, has not exactly covered itself in glory since it launched onto our screens in February 2017. The TV show seemed to try and copy the format of the late-night shows that are ever-popular in the US, but the ratings have been seriously struggling, it’s had poor reviews and been described as “cringe-worthy”. The 8-week-long series couldn’t even be saved by its bevvy of celebrity hosts.
In fact, this week’s fifth episode seems to have been considered the worst one yet, with viewers tweeting that the show had hit “an all-time low”. The host of this week’s 10pm show was celebrity chef, 50-year-old Gordon Ramsay, alongside guests, comedian Frank Skinner and Kaiser Chiefs singer Ricky Wilson, but despite the line-up, viewers switched off left, right and centre, with ratings dipping from 1.5million to below 1.2million by the end.
Viewers immediately jumped onto Twitter to discuss Gordon’s odd bouffant hairstyle, which seemed to take inspiration from pop duo, Jedward. One viewer tweeted: “Gordon Ramsey’s hair is gravity defying. #thenightlyshow.”, while another remarked, “Did Gordon Ramsay rub a balloon on his trousers before coming on stage on #thenightlyshow and hold it above his hair for the static?”
Did Gordon Ramsay rub a balloon on his trousers before coming on stage on #thenightlyshow and hold it above his hair for the static?

Gordon Ramsay is almost unrecognisable. What’s going on with his hair?? I thought it was Chris Packham 😳 #TheNightlyShow

Since when did Gordon Ramsey have so much hair? #thenightlyshow

Most people were waiting to see if Ramsay stayed true to his sweary persona and freely dropped the F-bomb. He didn’t disappoint. Gordon managed to say the F-word 16 times in half an hour, also throwing in “s**t” 8 times, and “a**e” and “b****y” once. He also took shots at rival chef Jamie Oliver, calling him a “fat f***” and claiming that Jamie was helping the UK’s obesity crisis by eating all the junk food himself. Miaow! Gordon tried his best with some rather cringe, old-fashioned pranks, which involved him scaring tourists in Madame Tussaud’s by pretending to be a waxwork and also faking blending his own fingers while making a smoothie, accompanied by more swearing.
To make matters worse, a technical glitch made the screen go blank during the ad break and kept the show off air for 3 minutes. During the halt in the programme, a sign appeared, stating “We’re sorry for the disruption”, and when normal service resumed the ITV announcer said they had “resolved the issues”. This led viewers to dispute this by saying that they may have fixed the technical problems, but that they hadn’t managed to fix the issues with the bad show. Some viewers also joked that the plug had deliberately been pulled as Gordon was doing such a poor job!
This is genuinely the best bit of The #NightlyShow from the last 4 weeks pic.twitter.com/Si71DOvWsO

Not everyone hated it though… Many viewers were impressed with Gordon’s efforts, with @lashes_17 saying, “WELL PLAYED SIR! knew you wouldn’t disappoint, best nightly show yet!” and @tonicgirl2011 commenting, “Got to hand it to Gordon….tonight’s “Nightly Show” was actually watchable. Congrats to Gordon Ramsey!” One Twitter user even went so far as to suggest that Chef Ramsay was “by far the best presenter yet” and should have “his own show”!
Gordon Ramsey is actually saving the Nightly Show. Just like he said he would

@GordonRamsay #NightlyShow actually made me wanna watch! Bravo sir

However, the consensus of opinion seemed to be that presenting was not Mr Ramsay’s forte and that he should stick to his day job. You know what they say Gordon, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen (or in this case TV studio)!
