Berhar Merlaku thought he’d scooped the huge payout, only to be told by Casino Bregenz bosses that his win was invalid due to a ‘software error in the machine.’

The casino offered him a free dinner and the £60 they claimed he had actually won, but Merlaku refused to accept and took the Austrian casino to court. A casino spokesman admitted the huge payout had flashed up on the machine, but claimed this was due to a fault.

He said: “We wanted to apologise but he (Berhar) did not want to co-operate. We offered to pay out the cash that he did win, but he refused to accept it.

However, Merlaku’s lawyers argued that the casino had refused to allow experts to check the machine, and according to local media, he was awarded £1m in compensation.

Berhar, 26, now plans to spend some of his windfall on urgent surgery for his baby son Erion, who was born with a cleft palate.
